Sugaring vs. Waxing: Understanding the Differences
At Prickles, Erica determines which method — sugaring or waxing — will be used based on the specific service and area being treated.
This is not a client preference decision, but one made with the client’s skin health, comfort, and results in mind.
Each treatment is tailored with purpose, using Erica’s years of experience and training to choose the technique best suited for the hair type, area, and condition of the skin.
Men and women receive the same service options, with the exception that male Brazilian and bikini services are not offered.
Sugaring
-
Sugar, lemon, and water — natural, edible, gentle on the skin
-
Adheres only to dead skin cells and hair
-
With the natural direction of hair growth
-
Applied at body temperature — no risk of burning
-
Naturally antibacterial — applied by gloved hand, then discarded
-
Gently exfoliates, leaving skin smooth and glowing
-
Can weaken hair over time by removing at the bulb
Waxing
-
Resin-based blends — commonly used in salons and spas
-
Adheres to hair and live skin
-
Against the direction of growth
-
Applied warm/hot — may cause discomfort or sensitivity
-
Requires careful single-use tools to prevent contamination
-
Removes hair and top layer of skin — may cause sensitivity
-
May break hair above the root, reducing effectiveness for some
⚡ Additional Sugaring Benefits:
When performed properly, sugaring may help:
Prevent and eliminate ingrown hairs
Extract all hair types and textures effectively
Treat all skin types and tones safely
Improve skin texture with continued use
Leave skin soft, smooth, and exfoliated
What sugaring does not do:
It won’t burn the skin
Won’t scar or pit delicate areas
Won’t damage the dermis or promote cross-contamination
When Waxing is Still a Strong Option:
While sugaring offers many benefits, waxing remains a highly effective and widely used method — especially for certain body areas (like backs or legs).
